The level of complexity involved with treatment planning for patients who have successfully completed previous courses of radiotherapy is one that can be challenging to even the most experienced dosimetrist. Pre-optimization uncertainties tied to the previously delivered dose and patient-specific anatomy complicates the manual planning process, possibly extending planning time significantly. PlanIQ dose modeling and feasibility analyses have shown to provide much-needed feedback in predicting not only whether re-irradiation is possible under a given prescription but also how our optimization criteria can be improved to maximize sparing of critical structures observed within these dose-overlap regions.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Understand the critical elements of incorporating PlanIQ dose prediction and feasibility analysis into planning preparation and Auto-Planning (AP).
  2. Define the strengths of PlanIQ in comprehensive treatment planning for re-irradiation and the advantages dosimetrists look to gain through its application.
  3. Discuss how informed treatment planning, the product of PlanIQ-AP integration, distinguishes itself from manual planning with supporting evidence directly from our research population.

Presenter:
Seth Duffy is a graduate of The University of Wisconsin, La Crosse’s Master of Science in Medical Dosimetry with an undergraduate degree in Public Health from Kent State University.

Prior to dosimetry, Seth has over ten (10+) years of experience as a certified professional tennis instructor (PTR) and touring player – having coached and played across most of the Eastern and Southern USA and playing NCAA division 1 college tennis. As a medical dosimetrist, Seth brings the passion and drive from his tennis background to continually expand his knowledge of planning systems and developing mastery within them. Challenging cases, that give him the opportunity to help someone overcome cancer, are the reason Seth loves his work.
