Since the idea of stereotactic radiosurgery was introduced in the 1950’s by Lars Leksell to the creation of the first stereotactic Gamma Knife in the 1960’s, the advances in this field have grown exponentially. Today there is an array of treatment machine options with increasing accessibility. This session will focus on Gamma Knife technology giving an overview of the treatment machine and workflow.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Explain what a Gamma Knife unit and list its components
  • Discuss the workflow for frame and mask based treatments
  • Identify what role Gamma Knife plays in stereotactic radiosurgery and how it compares with other available modalities

Presenter:
Sara Wach, MS, DABR, is a lead medical physicist at Northside Hospital with 15 years of experience in Medical Physics in both the community and university setting. She received her undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering and graduate degree in Medical Physics at Georgia Tech. She is involved in all aspects of medical physics within Northside Hospital and enjoys working on implementing new technology and procedures. Her primary interests are Brachytherapy, Gamma Knife and MR Guided Radiotherapy. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children and traveling.
