Presented by Yin Gao, PhD, CMD
University of Pennsylvania

This session will introduce RapidArc Dynamic (RAD), a new arc therapy technique that combines VMAT arc delivery, static angle modulated ports and dynamic collimator rotation.

The session discusses the role of beam orientation in radiotherapy planning and reviews the main features of the RAD, along with its practical workflow. Clinical evaluation results in locally advanced lung cancer will be presented, focusing on organ-at-risk sparing, planning efficiency, and considerations for clinical implementation.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Describe the importance of beam orientation in radiotherapy treatment planning and summarize key developments reported in the literature
  2. Explain RapidArc Dynamic (RAD), including arc segments, STAMPs, dynamic collimator rotation, and its key features
  3. Outline the workflow for creating treatment plans using RAD
  4. Summarize clinical evaluation results of RAD for lung cancer treatment planning

Educational Level: Intermediate

Presenter: Yin Gao, PhD, CMD, is currently in her final year of medical physics residency at the University of Pennsylvania and will join the faculty as an Assistant Professor in July 2026. She earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and holds an MS in Medical Physics from Duke University. She received her BS degree from Stony Brook University and subsequently worked as a Certified Medical Dosimetrist at Boston Medical Center before pursuing graduate training in medical physics.

Her research interests focus on AI-driven developments in radiotherapy, including automated treatment planning, clinical decision-making, and imaging processing. She is also involved in the development and evaluation of advanced techniques such as proton conformal FLASH and RapidArc Dynamic.
